Nurse Clinics
Nurse Clinics
Family Planning/Contraception
We offer comprehensive and confidential
advice, which is available during normal surgery times. We offer oral contraceptives,
injectable contraception and coils. Emergency contraception is prescribed when
appropriate. You need to seek advice within 72 hours.
Cervical Smears
Cervical smears are done mainly by
the practice nurses. Please inform the reception staff when you book your appointment
so that extra time can be allowed in the surgery. Our policy is to test every
woman aged 24-64 years every three years (unless the gynaecologist/consultant
recommends repeating the smear more often).
Routine Health Checks
Recommended every three years for
adults, these involve checks on blood pressure, urine, weight and immunisations
and advice on diet, cholesterol and smoking. Please bring a urine sample when
you attend. Please make an appointment to see the practice nurse.
Coronary Heart Disease And Hypertension
The practice nurses who have a special interest and special training in cardiovascular disease run these clinics.
The nursing team offers a comprehensive coronary heart disease prevention programme, including advice on smoking
cessation, alcohol consumption, dietary advice, weight reduction and blood pressure monitoring. Patients who have
been diagnosed with heart disease should attend for annual review.
HRT/Menopause
Routine follow-up of patients on HRT - usually at six-monthly intervals.
Diabetes And Asthma
Diabetes - annual review usually held around the time of your birth date.
Asthma - advice on using inhalers,
monitoring peak flow and annual review.
Patients Over 75
An annual health screen is available in the surgery for patients over the age of 75 years.
Influenza Vaccinations
Every autumn we offer a completely free flu vaccination to our patients. It is strongly recommended
for high-risk patients i.e. those over 65 years of age and those with other risk factors such as
diabetes, asthma or heart disease.
Pneumococcal Vaccinations
The Department of Health strongly recommends that all those aged 65 and over, plus people in certain risk groups should be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease. This is because patients falling in these groups are more likely to suffer its complications which can be severe or even fatal. As you fall into one of these recommended groups, you are eligible for free vaccination.
Foreign Travel (Business Or Pleasure)
The nurses will advise and administer
the appropriate immunisations for your holiday/business destination. Please allow
at least four weeks before departure. Please fill in a travel questionnaire (available
from reception) BEFORE booking with the nurse. Most immunisations are free on
the NHS. We charge, however, for immunisations not available on the NHS. Anti-malaria
tablets are no longer available on prescription.
Minor Surgery
All doctors perform minor surgery,
avoiding the need for you to go to hospital. If the doctor recommends this sort
of treatment arrangements will be made at the surgery.
Non-NHS Examinations
The doctors are happy to carry out
medicals (eg employment, insurance, and driving licence) by appointment. Please
ask the receptionist for the charges for these services.
Childhood Immunisations
Please book all childhood immunisations with one of the practice nurses. Please ring the receptionis and book an appointment in one of the Baby Clinics.
A current immunisation schedule for all childhood immunisations can be obtained from the practice nurses.
